Home Addition DIY Project - Built-in Bookshelves Part 1

Base Frame

A base was built under the bookshelves to raise them up off the floor, which will allow for a baseboard along the bottom. The base was built with a double stack of 2X4s along the wall and the front of the shelves. It is anchored to the wall to keep it from moving away from the wall.

2X4 Base for Custom Built-in Bookshelves

Bookshelves

One bookshelf is custom built and the others are bookcase kits from Walmart. The purchased shelf kits are Mainstays Framed 5-Shelf Bookcase and are fairly easy to assemble. The built shelf was made with self units from Menards that were cut down to the right sizes and glued and screwed together. It was built in 2 pieces and attached together. All shelf units were secured in place with L-brackets to keep them in place. The next step will be to attach a face frame to the shelves and paint the walls above the shelves.
